Writing to your local officials is powerful but limited

You take the time to write to your local officials, pouring your heart out, sharing your heartfelt concerns...but what happens after that email reaches their inbox? Do they even read it? And, if they do, is that enough?

Amplify your voice

The trouble with writing to local officials is that the emails remain private. Apart from you and the recipient, no one even knows it happened!

Your carefully-crafted letter of concern deserves better. Members of your community should know about it, be able to find it later, and even be encouraged to share their own thoughts on the topic.

Open Health Discussion Laramer is a public mailing list that offers all these benefits and is entirely free. You simply CC open-health-discussion-larimer@googlegroups.com when sending your email to your public official(s) and it will become a new thread in the mailing list. At that point, your email has now become an "open letter", visible to anyone, discoverable by search engines, and preserved in perpetuity in the public domain.

Promote engagement

All the emails sent to the mailing list are publically viewable on the homepage of the mailing list. Additionally, you can suscribe to the mailing list and you will get emailed a copy of any new emails posted on the mailing list.

An added bonus to subscribing is that you can reply to the emails you receive from the mailing list and your response will be sent to the very same public official(s) as well as recorded on the mailing list. In this sense, a public discussion unfolds as others share thoughts and feelings about the topic.

Open discussion solves this by keeping a public record of the emails you send to your local officials, effectively making them "open letters". This means other community members can see your emails and even write their own email to the same official by responding to them.

Open Health Discussion Laramer is a Google Group that aims to provide all of these benefits. It is completely free, email-based service that does not require any new passwords or accounts, not even a Google one.

Mailing lists to the rescue

Google Groups are essentially just a slightly more modern take on the concept of the mailing list. Mailing lists were once very popular for sharing information within an organization. While they are no longer commonly used and lack the fancy features we have grown accustomed to in the era of social media, their elegance and simplicity still makes them a perfect tool for political movements.

How does it work?

It's that easy. By including open-health-discussion-larimer@googlegroups.com as a recipient, your email instantly becomes a new thread in the Open Health Discussion Laramer Google Group. At that point, your email has now become an "open letter", visible to anyone, discoverable by search engines, and preserved in perpetuity in the public domain.
